• NFSB Plans to Double Mental Health Services Capacity

Demand for mental health services has never been greater. According to a survey of psychologists conducted in 2023 by the American Psychological Association, 56 percent of respondents had no openings for new patients. Nearly seven in 10 reported wait times of more than three months.

Research by the Mental Health Association in New Jersey produced similar findings right here at home. The 2022 survey of 124 outpatient mental health facilities in all 21 counties revealed that only 60 percent of facilities said they are accepting new patients. Wait times for intake and counseling appointments were more than 12 weeks, while wait times for appointments with a psychiatrist or APN were more than 22 weeks.

Nutley Family Service Bureau (NFSB) is stepping up to meet the unprecedented demand for counseling by doubling the amount of mental health services to 130 hours per week. Such a bold initiative will require additional staff, hours, and funding for in-person and virtual appointments.

“The most popular request we’re seeing is for appointments after school and work, beyond traditional 9-to-5 hours,” said Kelly Rivadeneyra, LCSW, Assistant Director of the Mental Health Center at NFSB. “We’re happy to say that we’ll be in a better position to accommodate those requests.”

Because the Mental Health Center at NFSB is an agency comprised of a group of highly qualified clinicians, we can often match clients with counselors who have experience with various types of conditions and challenges. Also, our services are covered by most major health insurance plans.

“Normally, immediate appointments for mental health services are available at NFSB with no waitlist,” Kelly said. “The only exception is when staff changes temporarily limit our capacity. The goal is always to respond to the needs of the community as quickly and effectively as possible.”

NFSB is in the process of finalizing new hours of operation and adding clinical staff to expand much-needed mental health services. Of course, we rely on the generosity of supporters throughout the Greater Nutley area to provide this and other programs. If you can help us meet the needs of our community with a one-time or monthly gift, we would greatly appreciate your donation.

We are grateful to continue to be a trusted resource after more than 110 years, and we encourage you to follow NFSB on Facebook and Instagram for the latest updates about the expansion of our mental health program.

If you or someone you know would like to have an open conversation with a counselor in a judgment-free safe space, schedule an appointment at NFSB.
