• Meet the Counselors: Charlotte Moore, LAC

Charlotte Moore, LAC, did not have a deep personal experience that motivated her to become a mental health counselor. She simply has a passion for helping people.

“I always felt like psychology and sociology were understudied topics in the community,” said Charlotte, who recently joined Nutley Family Service Bureau (NFSB) as a mental health counselor. “When I chose a career path, I wanted to help people feel happier and increase their overall wellness. I think it’s important that we elevate mental health, happiness, and wellness to the same level as physical health.”

Charlotte comes to NFSB with a diverse background serving a variety of populations facing difficult challenges in different types of facilities:

    • Bergen’s Promise, Bergen County Care Manager
    • Mental Health Association of Essex and Morris County, in-community counselor
    • Northeast Lifeskills, counselor for substance use and mental health disorders
    • Bergen County Department of Human Services, Division of Alternatives to Domestic Violence, intern and relationship abuse counselor

Charlotte has also served in multiple roles in municipal government tax and health departments and volunteered for the North Arlington Police Department.

“I really enjoyed my internship because relationship and domestic violence counseling with individuals and groups allowed me to have a real impact,” Charlotte said. “I also provided family crisis planning when I worked as a care manager, which was based more on family dynamics. Working with people who were facing domestic violence and different types of abuse was intense but rewarding.”

Charlotte’s experience also includes helping children and parents navigate family crises. For example, if a child was being bullied in school, Charlotte would help parents become a support network, not simply an authority figure. This would reduce the risk of the child becoming isolated and depressed while laying the foundation for a stronger relationship with parents.

Not surprisingly, the community environment and support services drew Charlotte to NFSB, which allows her to draw on her diverse background to help children, adults, seniors, families, and more.

“NFSB does provide quite an abundance of services, which is very rare,” Charlotte said. “They work with healing a wide array of mental health struggles and typical distress symptoms. You don’t have to be in crisis mode to seek mental health counseling.”

Charlotte is also excited about the more advanced training for NFSB clinicians as a result of the Inclusive Healthy Communities initiative and the more stringent rules that come with the ongoing accreditation process. Of course, daily opportunities to help people improve their overall wellness and become happier bring the greatest reward.

“My background in substance use counseling, domestic violence counseling, and family care management is really helpful when working with children and families,” Charlotte said. “It can take a long time to formulate a plan for helping people, but it’s very rewarding to see positive changes in their lives. That’s why we’re all here.”
